Book Series Saturday - Series I Want to Finish in 2020

Hello everyone, Emily here! As you may have seen in our TBR post yesterday, one of my reading goals for 2020 is to finish at least 10 series this year that I currently have unfinished. I have a MAJOR problem when it comes to finishing series. I’ll read the first one or two, LOVE IT, and then get really scared about finishing because I’m not ready to say goodbye! Or what if it doesn’t end well? Or what if it DOES end well and then I’ll want more?? I’m getting stressed out just thinking about it.

All of that being said, I really want to focus on finishing some series this year just to get some closure and knock some books off that ever growing TBR. Here are some series I think I’d like to finish. Let me know if you love them or think I should push them down the list!

Series I Want To Finish in 2020

1. The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

I’ve read the first three of this series and freaking LOVED it. It follows 5 friends who are trying to find (and wake?) the sleeping Welsh king Glendower. There’s tons of magic and intrigue and love stories and all the good things in this series. But I’m not ready for what I know has to happen in the last book AT ALL, so I’ve started and put down The Raven King a couple of times over the last few years. Now that Maggie is writing another spin-off series focusing on some of my favorite characters, I really need to make this happen this year.

2. The Nevernight Chronicle by Jay Kristoff

I was recommended this one by my good friend and major Nevernight fan, Mir over at Fangirl Pixie Blog. This series follows Mia Corvere, a girl who joins a school of assassins and all the terrible, bloody hijinks that ensue. I mainlined the first two in this series over a single weekend and then had to wait for Darkdawn. By the time it arrived, I absolutely was not ready to pick it up. What if I didn’t love it as much? What if I had to say goodbye to some favorite characters (I’m sure I do, since we all know Kristoff is a rat bastard). So basically, it’s just sitting there taunting me and I really want to get to it this year.

3. Arc of a Scythe by Neil Shusterman

I have only read the first book in this series but I adored it — it was a 5 star read for sure. In this series, set in the future, no one dies of natural causes anymore. However, to control population, people called Scythes are required to kill people chosen at random. The series explores the dark side of this seemingly utopian world, and the toll this world takes on the Scythes. I have heard this series ends amazingly and I’m super interested in the concept of the books but for some reason I cannot bring myself to pick up that second one yet, even though I really want to! This series is definitely on my “must finish” list!

4. The Spellslinger Series by Sebastien de Castell

Man this series is so good and don’t you just love those covers? I’ve read the first three books in this series that follows Kellen, a boy who has to pass mage tests, or else be resigned to life as a servant. On the eve of his test, he escapes with Ferius Parfax, a mysterious stranger who promises him a third option. Plus, there’s a talking squirrel-cat who is one of my absolutely favorite animal characters ever. I really loved the first three in this series but for some reason stopped picking them up. Now that the last one is out, I absolutely need to wrap this one up this year!

5. The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden

I read the first book in this series ages ago, before either of the other two were out. It follows young Vasya Petrovna as she discovers her magical lineage, finds her powers and realizes what she has to do to save the worlds she loves. It’s set in Russia and full of Russian folklore, which I totally love. I own both of these other two books just based on how much I loved the first one, and Haley said that Winter of the Witch was her favorite book last year so now I KNOW I need to finish this series ASAP.

What About You?

Are you like me, with a million series outstanding, or do you always finish what you start? Have you read any of these? What series are you trying to finish this year? I can’t wait to chat with you!

  1. I have several outstanding series. I need to finish several but I keep getting distracted by new ones. I really want to read Nevernight soon. It sounds so interesting.

  2. Darkdawn was tough. It was so hard to say goodbye to these characters but it was a hell of a ride. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do when you get to it. I’m reading The Raven Cycle right now. Going to start the third book this week. I am absolutely loving it.

I loved The Raven Cycle, so I highly recommend finishing that series! I’ve read the first book in the Nevernight and Scythe series - and I need to finish those this year as well.
