From the #1 New York Times bestselling co-author of Five Feet Apart comes a gripping new romance, perfect for fans of The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda.
Emily and her mum were always lucky.
But Emily’s mum’s luck ran out three years ago when she succumbed to cancer,
and nothing has felt right since.
Now, the summer before her senior year, things are worse than ever – Emily has
wrecked things with her boyfriend, Matt, and her dad is selling the house she
grew up in and giving her mum’s belongings away. The only person she has to
talk to is Blake, a girl she barely knows since she and her dad moved back to
town five seconds ago.
But that’s when Emily finds the list – her mum’s senior year summer bucket list
– buried in the back of her closet. When Blake suggests that Emily take it on
as a challenge, the two set off on a journey to tick each box and help Emily
face her fears over losing her connection to her mum. As she starts to feel
closer to her mother, so too does Emily’s bond with Blake deepen into something
she wasn’t expecting.
And suddenly Emily must face another fear: accepting the secret part of herself
she never got a chance to share with the person who knew her best.
A captivating, heartfelt love story about learning who you are, and who
you love, when the person you’ve always shared yourself with is gone.
Praise for THE LUCKY LIST:
“A countdown to finishing the list before a
class trip keeps the pacing solid, and an entertaining unraveling of
connections to her parents’ pasts adds nice depth. Told in Emily’s first-person
narration, the breezy tale explores the theme of learning to live life without
holding back, as Emily both questions her sexuality and learns to heal from her
grief….A truly charming summer romp.” — Kirkus Reviews

Q&A
1. What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
A lake trip with my in-laws. I really wanted a book that captured the magic and the potential of summer. How so much change can happen over those three months. How a girl can come into her own even when it seems impossible.
2. Who is your favorite character in the book?
Winston, Blake’s three-legged golden retriever.
3. Which came first, the title or the novel?
The novel! It actually had a different title to start out with. An Invincible Summer. I like this one more.
4. What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
Definitely the last one. It always makes me smile. My heart feels warm just thinking about it!
5. Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned as a writer from then to now?
How to hit my deadlines and work efficiently in a healthy and productive way without absolutely killing myself.
6. What do you like most about the cover of the book?
The sunflower! Or maybe the title in blue-silver foil. It’s so shiny!
7. What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2021?
SO MANY. Rise to the Sun by Leah Johnson, One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston, Pumpkin by Julie Murphy. My TBR is a mile long.
8. What was your favorite book in 2020?
Here the Whole Time by Vitor Martins.
9. What’s up next for you?
Working on my fourth book! Can’t talk too much about it yet, but I am EXTREMELY excited for this one.
10. Is there anything that you would like to add?
It’s YA, it’s set in Pittsburgh, and it’s been the MOST fun book to work on.
11. Which was the most difficult or emotional scene to narrate?
Chapter 28, pages 263-267.
12. Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?
Probably just the main character, Emily. I write in first person, so I very much am the character for the duration of the book. Being faithful to who she is and her story is always the most important, and most difficult, part!
13. Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?
Oh gosh, DRAFTING. I hate revising. I wish I was one of those people that absolutely loved the nitty-gritty, down in the dirt, ripping everything apart at the seams revising process but I am…not.
14. What would you say is your superpower?
Being able to sleep just about anywhere. Cars, that worn-out recliner in the living room, in the back of a pickup truck. You name it, I can get a quick fifteen minutes of shut-eye, no questions asked.
15. Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?
Definitely. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation after my work on Five Feet Apart. It’s an incredible organization, and the world’s leader in the search for a cure for CF.
